Murray Puppet Replica
Replica Builds, Sesame StreetThis is a quick image guide on how I built my Murray Monster from Sesame Street puppet replica. I tried to provide a lot of pictures for you to give you ideas on how you can build your own. Enjoy and feel free to ask me anything. I do not sell any replicas. This is simply a fun hobby I do for recreation only.
I built the mouth plate out of acrylic plastic. I made the bottom plate slightly larger for the underbite that Murray has.
I attached fabric with finger loops sewn to the fabric to the backside of the mouth plate.
Started creating head and tongue foam patterns.
Once I glued the foam pieces together with contact cement, I trimmed off quite a bit of the pattern to shorten the height of the head. I then glued it to the top mouth plate.
I then used a strip of foam and glued that to the bottom mouth plate for the chin/jaw.
I then added black velvet to the mouth plate with Super 77 adhesive spray.
I started working on the tongue. I put a small amount of contact cement around the edges of the heart shape piece of foam. Once the glue got tacky, I rolled the edges to create a smooth tapered edge. I then painted it with red acrylic paint.
I started working on the eyes. I used 2″ wood knobs painted white for the eye balls. I used orange antron fleece for the eye lids and fake lashes for the eyelashes. I used my Cricut to cut out the pupils from sticky velvet paper. The eyes are connected via a plastic plate on the inside of the foam skull with screws going through the plate into the wood knobs. The plastic plate acts as a washer between the foam.
I then created the head fur pattern. I cut out the faux fur and sewed that together and put it over the foam skull.
I gave the head fur a trim with scissors. I trimmed the face very short leaving the back of the head and the jaw line very long. I created the nose from a styrofoam egg wrapped with yellow antron fleece. I also used a mixture of yellow and orange ostrich feathers for the hair. The ostrich feathers came attached to a ribbon, and I used that ribbon to attach it to the back of the eyelids.
I created the body fur patterns, cut them out from the faux fur, and sewed them together.
I created the hands/glove patterns, cut them out from the faux fur, and sewed them together.
I sewed the arms to the body.
I then did quite a bit of touchups to the eyes and nose. I trimmed up certain parts of the body as well as the hands to make the fingers distinguishable. After all the clean up I was left with the finished project.
